Workshop: Municipality as a Catalyser for Scaling up Work Hubs

With the workshop “Municipality as a catalysator” the researchers in Mistra SAMS (WP3 Market) were invited to municipality dialogue at KTH on 20 June 2022. The aim was to learn more about municipalities’ views on how they can catalyze change processes and which role(s) the municipality could have in the process of scaling up distance work-hubs. For example, addressing which key collaborations that are needed to reach the targets groups of commuters or how transformative change can take place while still maintaining municipal tasks and services to their citizens.

The workshop started with a presentation by Claes Kanold from the organization Ruter, that manages public transport in Oslo. The Norwegian case showed examples where public transport organization Ruter has worked in collaboration with property owner organizations to identify suitable locations for work hubs with multifunctional use of space in mind.

Representatives from municipalities in the wider Stockholm area participating in the workshop included, for example, Botkyrka and Täby. The exchange of experiences also created an opportunity to discuss future needs and existing practices for facilitating work hubs as a means to reduce car travels and greenhouse gas emissions and how to work in innovative ways across organizational boundaries. By inviting representatives from different municipalities, we can draw on experiences from different contexts and enrich a discussion about municipalities’ view on important factors for scaling up work hubs. Moreover, it can provide a deeper understanding about municipalities’ views on key factors for implementation of Mobility as a Service (MaaS) and different types of added value from services in ongoing and planned Mistra SAMS work hub initiatives.
